Defining Ethical Issues In Media 

-Ethics in media is about doing the right/moral thing. Sometimes may be illegally correct, but is it the right thing to do?

Consider the ethical impact of a media product is important to ensure the product does not cause offence or bother those using/consumimg it.

Some of the areas that effect ethics in media adds are:

  • Codes of practise
  • privacy rights 
  • Public interest
  • levels of violence
  • Representation of groups

Media regulatory Bodies:
  • BBFC (The British Board Of Film Classification)
  • IPSO (The Independent Press Standards Organisations)
  • ASA (The Advertising Standards Agency)
  • OFCOM (The Office OF Comunications)
  • PEG (The Pan European Game Information)

ASA- All advertising
Ofcom - TV,Radio and telecommunications

BBFC- Film 
VSC- Gaming
PRS- Music
IPSO- Newspapers and magazines

Legal Issues:
Legislation- During the planning phase of the production, legal impact must be considered and acted upon.

-Defamation law (Slander and Libel)
-Copyright,designs and patents act 1988
-Freedom of information act
-Human rights act

Data Protection Act
  • Requires the person's consent
  • Should be kept for the reason it was collected
  • Should be processed securely
  • Should be processed within the UK
  • Should be kept up to date 
  • Should only be kept up to date 
Human rights 

-Keeps society fair just and equal
-European conventions of human rights
-The human rights act was passed on 1998

Interlectual property Law (Trade Marks)

-Name logo or both 
-Has to be renewed every 10 years
-Applies to brands

Copyrights

-Automatically applied to all things like documents plans photos and websites.
-it's free
-it last for 70 years after that 
-if you pay someone to make it for you then they own it unless they transfer it to you in writing.

Patents

-Can last up to 20 years 
-this is for any ideas that you create
-it's compliance expensive

Design rights

- Applied to furniture jewellery and clothing
-It's atomatic and free when working with a company

Defamation (Slander and Label)

Slander: When a false spoke statement is made and it is damaging to a persons reputation.
Libel: A published false statement that is damaging to a persons reputation (A written deformation).
