Client Breifs

Breifs: A document/request outlining what needs to be produced (the requirements).
Types:
Formal- A scheduled meeting between client and prducer. Client outlines their requirements for the product. Written documentation is provided for the meeting strongly the rules and regulations to be followed. The meeting allows detail to be looked at and follow up meetings to be arranged. This can also be done as a video conference.
advantages:
- because he brief is simple and easy to understand it is easier for the production companies to know what they need to do.
- in the meeting the company can negotiate what they want in the product with the client.
- because the brief is not legally bind to the production company it is possible for the client to change there mind and drop the production company or change the task completely.
- if the product doesnt reach the clients standard they can choose not to pay.
Informal- The client will discuss their requirements during a telephone call. No documentation provided, with the celebrants produced coming to a verbal agreement about the product to be produced.
advantages:
- the production company is allowed to have creative freedom and there is less pressure.
- because there is not written brief companies may see this as unprofessional.
- because there is no written brief companies might not even get paid for there product
- its possible for the client to hire two companies for the same project meaning the company not chosen has to waste the product they made that hasnt been chosen.
Negotiated- The client and producer work together to develop a brief project and digital bed a product. Discussion take place where the various aims and objectives are agreed before anything is formally written down.
Advantages:
- Because the project can be negotiated it means that the company gets more of a say in what they can do, meaning they have a higher chance of the client choosing there product.
- Unnecessary issues may be raised that the client doesnt wish to tackle, wasting time that is needed on the production.
- It takes longer to produce.
Contractual- The brief is outlined within a contract of employment.
Advantages:
- The client has a big day in what they want and the production company has a clear idea on what the client want. This is very helpful for media companies.
Disadvantages:
- Their could be arguments between the clients and the hired company on multiple things (e.g budget and payment)
- If the client doesnt like the finished product they could refuse to pay for it.
- If the company breaches the contract, by failing to comply with it or finishing the project past the deadline, they could taken to court and face legal action.
Tender- A client publishes an advert making clear that they need a media product to be created, and request bids from production companies. Then the production company send in their brief or pitch in response, retailing estimated costs timescales and how the product will be produced.
Advantages:
- The client will be able to see multiple different ideas from different companies.
- Each company has
Commissioned- A client hides a separate independent media company to create a media product for them. The media company does the research, create a proposal and planning for the project. The product will be developed based on this. A commissioner from the client oversees all of this.
Advantages:
- Even if the product made is not used, they will still get paid for their work.
Disadvantages:
- As their is more than two companies working on the project there could be clashes with ideas or competition.
